| St.
John's Church, Ladywood, Birmingham UK |
St. John's is a Grade 2 listed
building, built 1852-54, the parish church of Ladywood and one of the
outstanding Victorian churches in Birmingham. It is the only example
in Birmingham of a church by the architect Teulon which is in active
use. Samuel S. Teulon was one of the most original of High Victorian
Gothic architects. Teulon also built a house within the Birmingham Botanical
Gardens. J.A. Chatwyn, another distinguished Birmingham architect, made
fitting additions of chancel aisles and transepts in 1881. The church
is notable for its finely proportioned tower and curious turrets and
inside for its surprising and potentially lovely spaciousness and simple
arches, its beautiful chancel ceiling and fine tiled chancel floor and
its Victorian stained glass. Originally built for the growing dense
industrial housing of central Birmingham , the church has stood aloft
to serve the parish in the midst of an inner-city area of gross deprivation.
Now Ladywood looks towards the admirable new developments of Birmingham's
city centre and in the last three years has been able to boast its own
housing improvements. St. John's remains a haven amidst the city's traffic
and business. It offers amidst the endless changes and rush of this
age, a sense of history, continuity, and eternity. With its tower and
warm sandstone colouring, it is a commanding and friendly landmark,
readily visible all round. Being next to a large roundabout on the inner
ring road, it is very accessible to the whole of Birmingham and the
West Midlands. |
